Our Student Government consists of two children from each class who are elected by their peers. They will be canvasing options on a number of important topics throughout our school community. Every child will have the opportunity to contribute through voting during class council sessions. The counsellor’s are always looking for ways to improve our school and our local community. What have the Student Government been up to?

During the Autumn term, the school government wanted to make change straight away. We initially started by separating into different parties then chose a focus from an area of the school we wanted to improve or change.

The whole school voted for –

  • Green Party – Recycling whiteboard pens and glue sticks
  • Blue Party – Spaghetti Bolognaise on the school lunch menu every week
  • Red Party – Swings on the playground
  • Orange Party – New playtime equipment

After allowing the whole school (teachers too) to vote for one party, the Orange Party came out as winners!

In the weeks following this we agreed as a government that not only would we like the winning parties pledge to be actioned, but as many as possible! Immediately we arranged for specific recycling to be put into the office in order for our glue sticks and whiteboard pens to be collected for recycling. We also canvassed the school to find out which their favourite school lunch is. When ‘Jollof Rice’ won our poll, we spoke to the kitchen to see if this was possible and now we can have Jollof Rice every week at lunch!

In the spring term, we will be meeting with Miss Gladstone to discuss how to raise funds for our winning parties pledge ‘New Playtime Equipment’ and creating new parties and pledges to continue actioning change across the Spring and Summer!

In the summer term, the Student Government will be working closely with the St John and St James PTA and supporting them in raising money for the children of our school. We will be collaborating by coming up with new ways in which to raise money and gathering pupil voice to ensure that the money we do raise, goes towards the wants and needs of all children at St John and St James. We will also be supporting the PTA during the events and recruiting as many children and parents to help us too!
